Ghauri-II (Hatf-V)

Aug 27, 2025

The Ghauri-II is an upgraded and extended-range variant of the Ghauri-I. This medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) was designed to significantly increase Pakistan’s strike capabilities by extending the Ghauri’s range to a formidable 2,000 kilometers. Like its predecessor, the Ghauri-II is a liquid-fueled system, which means it requires a complex and time-consuming fueling process prior to launch. It is based on a two-stage design, with a larger motor that allows for a longer burn time and, consequently, an extended range. The Ghauri-II can carry a conventional or nuclear warhead weighing up to 1,500 kg, making it a powerful delivery vehicle for strategic payloads. Its guidance system includes an Inertial and Terminal guidance package to improve accuracy. The missile’s operational history includes a successful test flight in April 1999, where it traveled 1,100 km and reached its maximum range in subsequent tests. The Ghauri-II provides a deep-strike capability, allowing Pakistan to target key military and economic centers of its adversaries from a greater standoff distance. While its liquid-fueled nature makes it less responsive than solid-fueled missiles, its long range and heavy payload capacity make it a crucial part of Pakistan’s strategic deterrent force.
