MUNICH, GERMANY — Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, NI (M), HJ, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), arrived in Munich on February 14, 2026, to attend the 62nd Munich Security Conference (MSC). Amidst a backdrop of global geopolitical shifts, the Field Marshal’s presence underscores Pakistan’s evolving role in international security architecture and its strategic “Pivot to the West” in defense diplomacy.

Global Security in Focus: “Under Destruction”

The theme of MSC 2026, “Under Destruction,” addresses the fragmentation of the postwar international order. Field Marshal Munir is expected to engage with over 1,000 senior decision-makers, including 60 Heads of State and the largest-ever U.S. delegation, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Key agenda items for the Field Marshal include:

  • Transnational Counter-Terrorism: Briefing European partners on Pakistan’s efforts against Fitna-al-Khawarij and the regional implications of the Afghan security vacuum.

  • Geopolitics of the Global South: Participating in roundtables focused on balancing trade and security in an era of “bulldozer politics.”

  • Defense Modernization: High-level bilateral meetings with German and European defense contractors regarding joint ventures in emerging technologies.

A New Era of Military Diplomacy

This visit follows the Field Marshal’s recent promotion to the five-star rank, a status that has solidified his role as Pakistan’s primary interlocutor on the global stage. His participation in Munich follows successful missions to Riyadh and Jakarta, signaling a robust effort to align Pakistan’s security interests with both traditional Western allies and emerging partners in the Global South.

“Pakistan remains a pivotal state in ensuring regional stability,” a senior military source noted. “The Field Marshal’s engagements in Munich will focus on a collaborative approach to shared global threats, from cyber-warfare to nuclear risk mitigation.”
