Pakistan-Iran Reaffirm Commitment to Eradicate Terrorism, and Secure Borders

In a significant step towards enhancing regional stability, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir and his Iranian counterpart, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, on Tuesday reaffirmed their joint commitment to eradicate terrorism and secure the nearly 900-kilometre-long Pakistan-Iran border.

During a telephonic conversation, both military leaders emphasized that lasting peace and prosperity in their border regions is only possible through coordinated efforts against cross-border terrorist groups, including those responsible for destabilizing activities in Sistan-Baluchestan and Balochistan provinces.

According to a statement issued by the Iranian Embassy, both sides declared their readiness to eliminate terrorism and safeguard their borders. Gen Mousavi noted the growing cross-border movements of terrorist groups and called for intensified joint efforts to neutralize these threats.

Field Marshal Munir echoed the sentiment, stating: “The Pakistan-Iran border must jointly be transformed into a border of friendship, brotherhood, and economic development.” He also expressed gratitude for Gen Mousavi’s condolences over the victims of the recent terrorist attack in Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan Province.

Gen Mousavi extended solidarity with Pakistan’s flood-affected communities, assuring that Iran would proudly provide all possible assistance. He also commended Pakistan’s principled stance and support for Iran during its recent 12-day conflict with Israel.

The renewed military-level engagement follows Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to Pakistan earlier this month, where both nations agreed to prioritize border security as a foundation for expanded economic and trade cooperation. President Pezeshkian had stressed that peace and stability are essential for prosperity, while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s zero-tolerance policy against terrorism, stating: “If anyone falls victim to terrorism in Iran, it is the same as someone being affected by terrorism in Pakistan.”

Today’s conversation underscores the resolve of both sides to translate this commitment into practical security measures, ensuring safety for citizens living along the border and paving the way for stronger bilateral ties.
