11 December — Commemorating Gallantry in the 1971 War

by | Dec 11, 2025

The Pakistan Air Force today pays tribute to the exceptional courage, skill, and devotion to duty displayed by its air warriors on 11 December 1971—one of the most defining days of aerial combat in the closing phase of the war.

In the early hours before dawn, when darkness still cloaked the subcontinent, Squadron Leader Abdul Basit, SJ, along with his navigator Flight Lieutenant Ghulam Ahmad Khan, SJ, executed a daring low-level strike against the heavily defended Indian air base at Halwara. Flying at treetop height, the crew located the camouflaged runway and delivered eight delayed-fuse 1000-lb bombs with remarkable precision. As multiple surface-to-air missiles were fired in retaliation, the PAF crew successfully outmaneuvered the threat and returned safely—an action that remains a hallmark of bravery and superb airmanship in the face of overwhelming danger.

At first light, operations continued with equal intensity. Wing Commander Arif Iqbal and Squadron Leader Amanullah carried out a surprise attack on the Uttarlai airfield. Approaching undetected, their timely strike destroyed two HF-24 Marut aircraft on the runway in a swift and accurate engagement, underscoring the PAF’s ability to dominate the skies through speed, surprise, and precision.

Later that day, the battles unfolding near Shakargarh called for close air support. Three F-86 Sabres of No. 18 Squadron entered the combat zone and were soon engaged by Indian Air Force Su-7s. In the ensuing dogfight, the Officer Commanding No. 18 Squadron demonstrated exceptional situational awareness and marksmanship, shooting down an Su-7 with a controlled and decisive burst—further reinforcing PAF’s fighting spirit on one of the conflict’s most critical fronts.

The Pakistan Air Force honours the heroes of 11 December 1971 whose actions reflect the highest traditions of service, professionalism, and sacrifice. Their legacy endures in every squadron, every runway, and every new generation of air warriors who draw inspiration from their remarkable feats.
