Today marks a significant milestone in the history of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) as it celebrates the anniversary of the raising of No 10 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) Squadron. Since its inception on 19 December 2009, the squadron has served as a cornerstone of the PAF’s strategic reach, ushering in a transformational era of air-to-air refueling (AAR) and long-range operational depth.

The raising of No 10 Squadron at PAF Base, Nur Khan, introduced the IL-78 aircraft to the PAF’s inventory, fundamentally altering the dynamics of air power in the region. By enabling air-to-air refueling, the squadron effectively multiplied the combat effectiveness and endurance of the PAF’s fighter fleet, ensuring that the defenders of Pakistan’s skies can operate farther, longer, and with enhanced lethality.

From its pioneering early days, which included the launch of indigenous training and rigorous acceptance sorties, No 10 Squadron has evolved into a mature, battle-ready unit. Key achievements in its storied history include:

  • 2016 Landmark: Execution of fully independent dry and wet AAR camps with Mirage aircraft.
  • Technological Integration: Successful refueling trials with the indigenously produced JF-17 Thunder, solidifying the aircraft’s role as a potent multi-role platform.
  • International Presence: Conducting Pakistan’s first-ever AAR mission with a foreign Air Force during joint military exercises.
  • Operational Resilience: Showcasing exceptional adaptability during Exercise High Mark 2016, specifically through demanding night operations out of Quetta.
  • Global Reach: Most recently, enabling the PAF’s high-profile presence at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) 2025 in the United Kingdom.

The No 10 MRTT Squadron’s prowess extends beyond refueling to include strategic airlift and critical logistics support. This multi-role capability ensures that the PAF remains a flexible and agile force, capable of responding to any challenge across a broad spectrum of conflict and humanitarian requirements.

As the squadron enters another year of service, it remains committed to the vision of innovation and professional excellence. No 10 MRTT Squadron stands as a testament to the PAF’s foresight—powering its fighters in the steadfast defense of the nation’s sovereignty.
