A Legacy of Excellence and “Firsts”
Born in 1921, Asghar Khan’s journey in aviation began with the Royal Indian Air Force in 1940. A veteran of World War II, he demonstrated exceptional skill and courage in combat operations. In 1946, he etched his name in history by becoming the first officer from the subcontinent to fly a jet aircraft, the Gloster Meteor.
Following the independence of Pakistan, he dedicated himself to the monumental task of building the nation’s aerial defense from the ground up, overcoming severe resource constraints and rudimentary infrastructure. During the 1947–48 Kashmir War, he personally led daring airlift and airdrop missions to the remote regions of Gilgit and Skardu.
The Architect of a Modern Air Force
On 23 July 1957, at the youthful age of 36, Asghar Khan became the first Pakistani and first Muslim Commander-in-Chief of the PAF. During his transformative tenure, he pioneered a sweeping modernization program that defined the PAF’s operational doctrine for decades:
- Strategic Induction: Inducted cutting-edge platforms including the F-86 Sabre, F-104 Starfighter, B-57 Canberra, and C-130 Hercules.
- Infrastructure & Training: Established premier training institutions and modern air bases that remain the backbone of the service.
- Technological Advancement: Oversaw the installation of the nation’s first Air Defense radar systems.

Air Marshal Asghar Khan did more than lead; he infused the PAF with an ironclad spirit and a culture of professional excellence. His leadership remains the “soul of the service,” continuing to inspire every PAF Shaheen in their mission to safeguard Pakistan’s aerial frontiers.
