GIDS Unveils RAAST Drone Detection Radar to Counter Small-Scale Aerial Threats

by | Feb 25, 2026

Pakistan’s premier state-owned defense conglomerate, Global Industrial & Defense Solutions (GIDS), has officially unveiled RAAST, an indigenously developed Drone Detection Radar (DDR), at the Pakistan International Maritime Expo & Conference (PIMEC) 2025. Engineered to address the rising threat of low-radar cross-section (RCS) unmanned systems, RAAST represents a major leap in Pakistan’s domestic electronic warfare and situational awareness capabilities.

RAAST: Technical Specifications & Design

RAAST is a state-of-the-art Ku-band AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) Pulse Doppler radar specifically optimized for detecting “micro” and “mini” drones in high-clutter environments.

  • Precision Tracking: Capable of detecting targets as small as 0.01 m² RCS (roughly the size of a commercial quadcopter) at ranges up to 10 km.

  • Scan Dynamics: Utilizes mechanical azimuth rotation for full 360° coverage combined with electronic elevation scanning up to 30°, completing a full scan cycle in just 2 seconds.

  • Target Capacity: The system can simultaneously track and categorize over 200 targets, providing real-time data to command centers.

  • Rapid Deployment: The modular system consists of a 43 kg radar unit and a 32 kg servo unit, allowing a 2-man crew to achieve full operational status in under 10 minutes.

Strategic Applications: From Borders to Battlespace

As drone swarms and loitering munitions become a staple of modern asymmetric warfare, RAAST is positioned as a critical defensive node:

  • Force Protection: Safeguarding high-value military assets and critical infrastructure from “kamikaze” drone attacks.

  • Coastal & Border Defense: Strengthening the Durand Line and coastal regions against illicit surveillance and small-scale aerial incursions.

  • Situational Awareness: Integrating with GIDS’ existing Spider and Safrah-III jamming systems to provide a “Detect-and-Defeat” solution.

  • Counter-Terrorism: Enhancing the ability of security forces to monitor complex urban or mountainous terrains in anti-insurgency operations.

GIDS at PIMEC 2025: A Maritime Milestone

The unveiling at PIMEC 2025 underscores GIDS’ expanding role in maritime security. By integrating RAAST onto naval vessels or coastal batteries, the Pakistan Navy can effectively monitor the sea-air interface against autonomous surface and aerial threats.

  • AESA Technology: The transition to AESA reflects Pakistan’s maturing defense industrial base, reducing reliance on foreign sensors.

  • Combat Proven: According to official statements, the system has already undergone rigorous field testing and is currently being inducted into the operational service of the Pakistan Armed Forces.
