Pakistan Air Force Commemorates 7th Anniversary of Operation Swift Retort

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) today commemorated the seventh anniversary of Operation Swift Retort, marking the historic 2019 air battle that demonstrated the nation’s unwavering resolve and calibrated response in the face of aggression.

Addressing a high-profile ceremony at Air Headquarters, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, Chief of the Air Staff, delivered a powerful message of deterrence, modernization, and national sovereignty.

A Legacy of Credible Deterrence

Reflecting on the events of February 27, 2019, the Air Chief noted that the adversary had fundamentally miscalculated Pakistan’s resolve by attempting to challenge its sovereignty under the cover of darkness. He emphasized that the PAF’s “measured broad daylight response” re-established a credible deterrence that remains the cornerstone of Pakistan’s defense posture against numerically superior forces.

“Pakistan is a responsible country which desires peace with honor,” stated Air Chief Marshal Sidhu. “Seven years ago, we proved that any miscalculation of our capability would be met with professional and decisive force.”

Transition to a Next Generation Air Force

Despite global fiscal constraints, the Air Chief highlighted that since March 2021, the PAF has undergone a radical transformation. Key highlights of this modernization include:

  • Multi-Domain Kill Chain: The establishment of a unique, home-grown capability integrating Unmanned Systems, Electronic Warfare, Space, and Cyber assets.

  • Operational Doctrine: A complete recalibration of doctrine to meet the evolving character of modern, multi-domain warfare.

  • Indigenization: A strategic shift toward self-reliance and the induction of advanced combat and support platforms.

Marka-e-Haq (May 2025): A New Benchmark in Air Warfare

In a significant disclosure, the Air Chief referred to Marka-e-Haq in May 2025 as the first successful execution of full-spectrum, multi-domain operations by the PAF. When national sovereignty was challenged last year, the PAF decisively overwhelmed the adversary through:

  • Air Superiority: The downing of advanced enemy platforms, including Rafale, SU-30 MKI, Mirage-2000, and MiG-29 aircraft, alongside various Unmanned Aerial Systems.

  • Strategic Strikes: Precision strikes executed deep within hostile territory.

  • Defensive Neutralization: The successful neutralization of S-400 air defense systems and their associated Command and Control Centers.

Commitment to Sovereignty

The ceremony concluded with a reaffirmation of the PAF’s commitment to remain a symbol of national pride. The Air Chief vowed that the PAF would continue to maintain a vigilant yet responsible defense posture, ensuring that the skies of Pakistan remain inviolable.
