The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) today celebrates the birth anniversary of Air Commodore Nazir Ahmad Khan, a decorated “Ghazi” of both the 1965 and 1971 Wars. Renowned as one of the most versatile and courageous transport aviators in the nation’s history, his career was defined by operational brilliance, tactical innovation, and a fearless commitment to supporting ground forces in the most perilous conditions.

1965 War: Operation Gibraltar and the C-130 Bomber

Then-Flight Lieutenant Nazir Ahmad Khan’s contributions during the 1965 War remain a study in precision and aerial improvisation:

  • Night Supply Over Srinagar: In August 1965, he volunteered for high-risk night supply missions in the Srinagar Valley. On August 23, flying an unarmed transport aircraft through adverse weather and treacherous mountain terrain, he executed a “blind drop” with remarkable accuracy, delivering 28,000 pounds of guns and ammunition within 500 meters of the target zone.

  • The “Hercules” Bomber: In a historic tactical first, the PAF converted the C-130 Hercules into a heavy bomber. Flt Lt Nazir Ahmad Khan was instrumental in developing the procedures for this unprecedented role. He personally flew a landmark bombing mission in the Lahore-Kasur sector, releasing his payload and escaping intense anti-aircraft fire at “treetop level.”

1971 War: Commando Assault Landings in East Pakistan

During the 1971 conflict, then-Squadron Leader Nazir Ahmad Khan demonstrated exceptional bravery while operating in the challenging environment of East Pakistan:

  • SSG Deployment: In April 1971, he conducted daring, low-level assault landings to deploy Special Services Group (SSG) commandos. These high-stakes maneuvers were critical for the recapture of the Lal Munir Hat and Sylhet airfields.

  • Sitara-e-Basalat: For his “exceptional gallantry and steadfast devotion to duty” during these high-risk transport operations, he was awarded the Sitara-e-Basalat.

Air Commodore Nazir Ahmad Khan’s career spanned the full spectrum of transport aviation—from humanitarian supply drops to heavy-lift bombing and special forces insertions.
