On this day, 17th April, the Pakistan Air Force solemnly commemorates the Shahadat anniversary of Flight Lieutenant Syed Safi Mustafa Shaheed, Sitara-e-Jurat — a courageous fighter pilot, dedicated commander, and true embodiment of the highest traditions of valour and sacrifice.

During the 1971 War, Flt Lt Safi Mustafa was entrusted with the command of No. 246 Mobile Observer Unit at Dacca. Tasked with providing critical early warning against enemy air activity in increasingly hostile conditions, he displayed exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to duty. As the security situation in East Pakistan rapidly deteriorated and insurgent threats intensified, he refused to abandon his post or his men despite repeated advice to withdraw for safety.

Even as communications became difficult and the situation grew perilous, Flt Lt Safi Mustafa maintained constant contact with higher headquarters and remained a steadfast guardian of his unit. He chose to stand firm with his personnel until the very end, ultimately embracing martyrdom at the hands of hostile elements while protecting those under his command.

In recognition of his conspicuous gallantry, selfless leadership, and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Sitara-e-Jurat.

Today, his story of courage, devotion to duty, and unshakeable loyalty continues to inspire generations of Pakistan Air Force personnel. Flt Lt Syed Safi Mustafa Shaheed remains a shining symbol of the PAF’s enduring spirit — a legacy written in honour and blood that reminds every air warrior of the sacred responsibility to defend the skies of Pakistan with bravery and resolve.

The Pakistan Air Force salutes the supreme sacrifice of this gallant officer and reaffirms its commitment to uphold the ideals for which he laid down his life.
