A distinguished member of the PAF’s No. 19 Squadron, under the leadership of Squadron Leader Sajad Haider, then Flight Lieutenant Ghani Akbar played a pivotal role in the defense of Pakistan during the 1965 War. On September 6th, 1965, he participated in the legendary “Zambu” strike missions, targeting advancing Indian forces near Wagah and later the Indian Air Force (IAF) base in Pathankot.
Flying an F-86 Sabre armed with rockets and guns, Flight Lieutenant Akbar and his squadron executed repeated low-level attacks against enemy armor, artillery, and military convoys advancing towards Lahore. These crucial missions were instrumental in halting the Indian offensive on the very first day of the war, preventing a potentially devastating breach.
Later that same day, Squadron Leader Akbar was also part of the audacious strike against IAF Base, Pathankot. This operation achieved complete surprise, catching the enemy off guard. Despite facing intense anti-aircraft fire and critically low fuel during the return flight, Akbar demonstrated exceptional bravery and tactical awareness. Spotting an undamaged enemy aircraft on the airfield, he executed a final attack, successfully destroying it before returning to Sargodha with mere moments to spare before complete fuel exhaustion.
Throughout the 1965 conflict, Squadron Leader Akbar flew numerous ground attack and air defense missions, displaying extraordinary courage, determination, and unwavering commitment to his duty. His gallantry in combat earned him the Sitara-e-Jurat, one of Pakistan’s highest military honors.
