The Kalaikunda Victory: A Masterclass in Audacity
On September 7, 1965, then-Squadron Leader Shabbir Hussain Syed, Commanding Officer of the renowned No. 14 Squadron (“Tail Choppers”), led one of the most daring low-level missions in aerial combat history.
-
The Mission: Leading a formation of five F-86 Sabres from Tejgaon (East Pakistan), Sqn Ldr Shabbir navigated nearly 300 kilometers at tree-top level to evade radar detection.
-
The Strike: Achieving total tactical surprise at the IAF base in Kalaikunda, the formation targeted rows of Canberra bombers and Hunter aircraft exposed on the tarmac.
-
The Toll: Under his direct leadership, the Sabres carried out repeated strafing passes, destroying ten Canberra bombers and crippling several Hunter aircraft.
-
Aerial Combat: During the withdrawal, Sqn Ldr Shabbir engaged and shot down an enemy Hunter aircraft in a fierce dogfight, ensuring the safe return of his formation.
Legacy of the “Tail Choppers”
The overwhelming success of the mission earned No. 14 Squadron the iconic title of “Tail Choppers,” a name that continues to signify precision and bravery within the PAF.
-
Bagdogra Strike: Demonstrating relentless resolve, Sqn Ldr Shabbir led another successful strike on the Bagdogra IAF base on September 10, 1965, further neutralizing enemy air assets.
-
Gallantry: For his “audacity, professional excellence, and resolute leadership,” he was conferred the Sitara-e-Jurat (SJ), one of Pakistan’s highest gallantry awards.
Professional Excellence and Inspiration
Beyond his wartime heroics, Air Marshal Shabbir Hussain Syed’s career was defined by his commitment to the modernization and tactical evolution of the PAF. As a co-author of the definitive History of the Pakistan Air Force (1947–1982), he played a vital role in preserving the institutional memory and lessons of the force for future generations.
His legacy as an “officer and a gentleman” remains an enduring source of inspiration for today’s air warriors, embodying the PAF’s motto: “A second to none.”
