The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) today pays solemn tribute to Group Captain Sikandar Mahmood Khan, Sitara-e-Jurat (SJ), on his death anniversary. A legendary bomber pilot and a hero of the 1965 War, his extraordinary service remains a cornerstone of the PAF’s proud history of professional excellence and tactical brilliance.

1965 War: The Master of Deep-Penetration Strikes

During the 1965 War, then-Flight Lieutenant Sikandar Mahmood Khan served with the elite No. 7 Squadron. He became renowned for his “deep-penetration” missions, navigating heavily defended enemy airspace to strike at the heart of the adversary’s airpower.

  • The Halwara Mission: On the night of September 16, 1965, he led a daring two-ship strike against the Halwara Air Force Station. Flying a complex Hi–Lo–Hi profile to evade radar detection and conserve fuel, he penetrated deep into hostile territory under strict radio silence.

  • Precision Under Fire: After dropping to low level for his attack run, he placed a precise load of 1,000-lb bombs directly on the target. Demonstrating nerves of steel, he turned back through an “inferno” of tracer fire and anti-aircraft shells to execute a second bombing pass before skillfully navigating his low-fuel aircraft back to Pakistan.

A Record of Conspicuous Gallantry

Throughout the 17-day conflict, Group Captain Sikandar Mahmood Khan flew a total of 15 high-risk strike missions. His targets included some of the most heavily fortified Indian air bases:

  • Ambala, Adampur, and Pathankot

  • Jamnagar, Jodhpur, and Halwara

Despite frequent fighter interceptions and intense ground-based barrages, he repeatedly pressed his attacks with unwavering determination. In recognition of his exceptional devotion to duty and conspicuous gallantry, he was awarded the Sitara-e-Jurat, Pakistan’s third-highest military honor.

An Enduring Inspiration

Group Captain Sikandar Mahmood Khan’s legacy is defined by a rare combination of courage, precision, and tactical resolve. His life and service continue to serve as a beacon for the young men and women of the Pakistan Air Force, embodying the highest traditions of the “Second to None” force.

The PAF remains committed to upholding the values of professionalism and steadfast service exemplified by heroes like Group Captain Sikandar Mahmood Khan, ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten.
