Today, February 20, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) marks the birth anniversary of Flight Lieutenant Zulfiqar Ahmad Shaheed, Sitara-e-Jurat (SJ), a distinguished bomber navigator whose heroism during the 1971 War remains a cornerstone of the nation’s aerial history.

As one of the youngest members of No. 7 Squadron’s Bomber Wing, Flt Lt Zulfiqar demonstrated exceptional technical mastery and composure under fire. On the night of December 3, 1971, he successfully navigated a high-risk bombing mission against the heavily defended Jodhpur Air Force Base. Despite intense anti-aircraft fire, he guided his B-57 bomber to the target with pinpoint accuracy, executing a devastating strike before exiting at deck level.

His final mission occurred on the night of December 4/5, 1971, targeting the fortified Jamnagar airfield. Facing formidable enemy defenses, Flt Lt Zulfiqar and his crew pressed the attack with unwavering resolve. After successfully completing the mission, Flt Lt Zulfiqar embraced Shahadat (martyrdom) in the line of duty, making the ultimate sacrifice for the sovereignty of Pakistan.

In recognition of his conspicuous gallantry and steadfast devotion, he was posthumously awarded the Sitara-e-Jurat. His legacy continues to serve as a beacon of professional excellence and valor for current and future generations of PAF air warriors.
