In a tragic escalation of violence in northern Pakistan, a vehicle belonging to the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) was targeted by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in the Tangir Boshidas area of Gilgit-Baltistan on Thursday, February 12, 2026. The attack was carried out by terrorists identified by state authorities as belonging to Fitna al-Khawarij (the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan).
The FWO personnel were returning to Gilgit following a routine inspection of the Tangir Hydropower Project, a critical infrastructure development for the region. Terrorists lying in ambush detonated the device as the vehicle passed, causing severe damage to the platform.

-
Retaliatory Action: Security forces stationed nearby responded with immediate force, engaging the fleeing terrorists in a fierce gunfight. Two terrorists were successfully neutralized in the retaliatory fire.
Security and Investigation
Following the attack, a large-scale search and combing operation was launched in the rugged terrain of Tangir. Security forces have successfully apprehended four suspected individuals believed to be linked to the facilitation of the ambush.
The “Fitna al-Khawarij” label, officially adopted by the Pakistan government in 2024-2025, reflects the state’s ideological stance against the TTP, framing them as religious outcasts who have strayed from the teachings of Islam. This latest attack on the FWO—a military-led engineering organization—is seen as an attempt to sabotage vital energy and infrastructure projects in Gilgit-Baltistan.
