Naval Chief Highlights Strategic Importance of Indian Ocean’s Strategic at International Conference

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf emphasized the critical role of the Indian Ocean in global trade and the potential impact of disruptions on supply chains and energy prices during a recent international conference. Speaking at the conclusion of the two-day event, “Emerging Technologies and the Future Warfare,” hosted by the Maritime Centre of Excellence (MCE), Admiral Ashraf cautioned that the future of warfare is being shaped in this vital region.

The conference brought together maritime experts, academics, and defense industry representatives to discuss evolving geostrategic trends and the influence of technology on modern warfare. Admiral Ashraf stressed the need for collaboration between industry, end-users, and academia to foster innovation, adaptability, and operational readiness. He believes this partnership will drive indigenization and self-reliance, creating a cost-effective and globally competitive defense ecosystem for Pakistan with export potential.

Admiral Ashraf pointed out the blurring lines between civilian and military applications of advanced technologies, presenting both opportunities and challenges for Pakistan’s defense. Participants explored how rapid technological advancements are transforming warfare by reshaping operational concepts, force structures, and outcomes.

The event saw participation from senior military leaders, policymakers, diplomats, academics, industry experts, and university students, concluding with a renewed commitment to intellectual collaboration to navigate technology-driven transformations and leverage future trends in warfare.

The Pakistan Navy has demonstrated its capabilities through recent exercises, including a “Passage Exercise” with the Royal Oman Navy and a comprehensive exercise in the North Arabian Sea, showcasing surface-to-air missiles, loitering munitions, and an unmanned surface vessel. The Navy also highlighted its role in deterring the Indian Navy during past hostilities, ensuring the safety of Pakistan’s maritime trade routes and coastal regions.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has praised the Pakistan Navy for its readiness and professionalism, affirming their preparedness to defend the nation’s maritime interests.
