Kings of the Cambrian: Pakistan Army’s Golden Legacy in the Cambrian Patrol Exercises

by | Oct 21, 2025

Exercise Cambrian Patrol is recognized around the world as one of the toughest and most elite international military exercises, commonly referred to as the ‘Olympics of Military Patrolling’. It is a yearly event conducted by the British Army and hosted by Headquarters 160th (Welsh) Brigade. The exercise is set against the challenging backdrop of the Cambrian Mountains in Wales.

Origins and Evolution (1959 to Present)

The exercise finds its roots in 1959, when the Welsh Territorial Army (now Army Reserve) soldiers planned a tough weekend training exercise. In August of 1960, Major General Lewis Pugh DSO, a Welsh military officer in the British Army, officially inaugurated the event as Exercise Cambrian Patrol.

Initially, during the 1960s and 1970s, the exercise was essentially a ‘march and shoot exercise’. It spanned up to 70 miles over four days. A dramatic change took place in the 1980s when the exercise changed to its contemporary ‘tactical patrol configuration’.

Exercise Requirements

Cambrian Patrol is now an ongoing, 48-hour patrol in which eight-man patrols have to tactically cover about 60–65 km (40 miles) of challenging terrain. This endeavor sometimes involves carrying heavy loads. Along the way, these teams are presented with a variety of realistic, scenario-driven problems or ‘stands’ that mimic the sophistication of the current operating environment. These challenges involve:

  • Casualty evacuation and medical treatment (Casevac).
  • Defending against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (C-CBRN) attacks.
  • Intelligence gathering and close-target reconnaissance.
  • Operational law and ethical behavior tests.

The exercise is a ‘training and evaluation event’ intended to verify the basic training standards, leadership, and operational proficiency of participating units. Patrols are marked on performance and are distinguished:

Gold (75% or more of total points), Silver, Bronze, or a Certificate of Merit (Pass). The event draws top teams from a huge pool of global armed forces, making it an important platform for promoting military cooperation and setting global patrolling standards.

The Pakistan Army has always performed outstandingly at Exercise Cambrian Patrol. They are known for having high levels of training, leadership, tactical skills, and sheer endurance. The gold medal is the most prestigious award given. It means that the patrol scored 75% or more of the available marks. Pakistan’s performance is indicative of the country’s world-class standards of training and operational capabilities, frequently against tough international opposition.

Verified Past Awards (Gold Medals)

The Pakistan Army has attained the illustrious Gold Medal in the following years, confirmed by them, showing their year-round excellence:

  • 2010 Gold Medal: One of Pakistan’s earliest confirmed Gold victories.
  • 2015 Gold Medal: The Pakistan Army squad defeated about 140 squads from armies all over the world.
  • 2016 Gold Medal: Won against the armies of about 120 participating nations of the world.

  • 2024 Gold Medal: Won against 128 teams from 42 nations.
  • 2025 Gold Medal: The latest win, a consecutive one, and as a continuation of the success string.

Whereas the Pakistan Army has also received silver and bronze awards in other years, the above-given gold medal victories are the peak of their performance in this globally acclaimed military exercise. The repeated victories, especially the recent back-to-back gold medals in 2024 and 2025, place the Pakistan Army among the most professionally skilled and powerful armies on the world stage.
