Feats of Daring in the Night Sky
As intensifying battles demanded extraordinary bravery, several air warriors pressed deep into enemy territory under the cover of night:
- Flt Lt Israr, SJ, SBt: Alone in a T-6G Harvard over the embattled Chamb sector, Flt Lt Israr relentlessly attacked enemy convoys through blinding darkness and punishing ground fire. Displaying indomitable grit, he pressed on even after a shell shattered his arm, successfully bringing his severely damaged aircraft home, wounded but unbroken.
- Sqn Ldr Yousaf Alvi, SJ, SBt: Demonstrated flawless timing by striking the heavily defended Agra base at their exact Time-on-Target, catching the enemy completely off guard.
- Sqn Ldr Ishfaq, SJ and Flt Lt Zulfiqar, SJ: Launched a bold and daring assault on the heavily defended Jamnagar base, embracing martyrdom amid their unwavering charge, a supreme act of devotion to duty.
- Flt Lt Javed Iqbal, TJ and Flt Lt Murtaza Malik, TJ: Flying a B-57 deep into Amritsar’s layered defenses, they completed two critical bombing runs before embracing martyrdom.
Daylight Dominance and Air Defence
Daylight only sharpened the PAF’s momentum, showcasing its professional dominance:
- Sqn Ldr Amjad Hussain Khan, HI(M), SJ, SBt: Led a four-ship strike that successfully neutralized Amritsar’s reinforced radar, despite facing fierce anti-aircraft (ack-ack) fire.
- Sqn Ldr Arif Manzoor, SJ, TBt: Led a determined Mirage strike on Pathankot, successfully dropping 750-lb bombs on target under intense fire while deftly evading an intercepting Gnat.
- Air Defence Excellence: In the air defence role, Flt Lt Shahid Raza, TJ and Wg Cdr Saad Hatmi, SJ, TBt intercepted two enemy Hunters near Sakesar, downing both aircraft with decisive precision.
The heroes of December 5, 1971, embodied the Pakistan Air Force’s finest virtues—steadfast, fearless, and unyielding. Their enduring legacy continues to light the path for every air warrior who rises to guard Pakistan’s skies and reinforces the nation’s profound pride in its courageous defenders.
