Pakistan Nears Historic Space Milestone: Suparco Announces Final Astronaut Candidates for 2026 Mission

by | Feb 7, 2026

The Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) is proud to announce a historic breakthrough in the Pakistan Human Spaceflight Programme. Following an intensive international evaluation process, two final astronaut candidates have been shortlisted to represent the nation in orbit.

A Rigorous Selection Process

After an initial nationwide screening, the finalists underwent a battery of rigorous medical, psychological, and aptitude assessments at the Astronauts Centre of China (ACC). These evaluations were conducted in strict accordance with international human spaceflight standards to ensure the candidates are prepared for the extreme conditions of space.

Advanced Training and Mission Timeline

The two shortlisted candidates are set to begin six months of advanced, specialized training at the ACC. This high-intensity program serves as the final gateway to the stars:

  • Mission Target: October / November 2026.
  • Destination: The Chinese Space Station (CSS).
  • Final Selection: Upon completion of the six-month training period, one candidate will be designated for the historic mission to the CSS.

A Symbol of Ironclad Friendship

This landmark initiative is the result of the “Astronaut Cooperation Agreement” signed in February 2025. This collaboration underscores the vision of the Prime Minister of Pakistan to advance the nation’s technological and scientific frontiers.

Significantly, the Government of the People’s Republic of China has selected Pakistan as the first foreign partner in its prestigious astronaut program, further cementing the “all-weather” strategic partnership between the two nations.

Towards a New Frontier

“This milestone is more than just a scientific achievement; it is a symbol of Pakistan’s rising potential in the global space community,” stated a SUPARCO representative. The mission aims to inspire a new generation of Pakistani scientists, engineers, and explorers while conducting vital research aboard the CSS.
