Hostilities along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border escalated sharply overnight as both sides reported significant casualties and territorial gains, further deepening the crisis between the two neighbors.
Afghan (Taliban) officials claimed their forces killed 58 Pakistani soldiers during retaliatory operations, capturing 25 Pakistani border posts and wounding 30 troops. Pakistan rejected these figures, stating it lost 23 soldiers in the clashes, and asserting that its forces captured 19 Afghan posts, while killing over 200 Taliban and affiliated fighters in counterattacks.

The confrontation comes in the wake of alleged Pakistani airstrikes on Kabul and markets in eastern Afghanistan, which Kabul condemned as violations of its sovereignty. Pakistan has not publicly confirmed those strikes but said its escalated actions aimed to disable TTP (Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan) sanctuaries that it accuses Afghanistan of harboring.
Key border crossings, including Torkham and Chaman, were shut down following the exchanges of fire, further disrupting trade and civilian movement.
According to Pakistani military statements, the clashes involved gunfire and artillery exchanges across multiple border districts. Afghan spokesmen said their operations ceased at midnight and accused Pakistan of repeated violations of Afghan airspace and territory. Regional mediators including Qatar and Saudi Arabia have reportedly intervened, encouraging both sides to halt further escalation.
The current standoff marks one of the sharpest escalations between Islamabad and Kabul in recent years, highlighting the fragile security environment along the Durand Line and the ever-present threat posed by militant groups operating across the border.
