The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) today honors the enduring legacy and supreme sacrifice of Squadron Leader Saadat Akhtar Shaheed, Sitara-e-Jurat, Sitara-e-Basalat, on the anniversary of his Shahadat. A master bomber navigator and a paragon of professional excellence, Sqn Ldr Saadat remains a towering figure in the annals of Pakistan’s aerial warfare history.

A Pioneer and Mentor

Recognized as a “Walking Encyclopaedia” of navigation, Sqn Ldr Saadat Akhtar was among the first elite navigators to convert onto the B-57 bomber. A graduate of the prestigious Staff Navigation Course at Shawbury, UK, his career was defined by an unparalleled mastery of the bomber role. As an inspirational mentor, he was instrumental in shaping the technical and operational proficiency of generations of PAF navigators.

Gallantry in the 1965 War

During the 1965 War, Sqn Ldr Saadat Akhtar displayed fearless resolve across 15 high-risk operational missions. His contributions were pivotal in several key theaters:

  • Deep Penetration Strikes: Conducted audacious unarmed intelligence sorties deep within enemy territory.
  • Close Air Support: Provided precision strikes in the Sialkot–Samba sector, effectively neutralizing enemy ground concentrations.
  • Strategic Bombing: On the night of 11/12 September, he navigated a four-ship strike against the heavily defended Halwara Air Base. Despite blackout conditions and intense anti-aircraft fire, his pinpoint navigation allowed the formation to crater runways and taxiways successfully.

His relentless pursuit of targets including Ambala, Adampur, Jodhpur, and Pathankot earned him the Sitara-e-Jurat (SJ) for exceptional gallantry in the face of the enemy.

Final Sacrifice and Legacy

Sqn Ldr Saadat Akhtar embraced Shahadat on February 11, 1969, following an ejection from a malfunctioning B-57 aircraft at Mauripur. In recognition of his lifelong devotion to duty and his enduring contributions to the Bomber Wing, he was posthumously awarded the Sitara-e-Basalat (SBt).

A consummate professional who truly departed “with his boots on,” Squadron Leader Saadat Akhtar Shaheed remains an enduring symbol of courage, leadership, and selfless service. The Pakistan Air Force reaffirms its commitment to the values he championed, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire the air warriors of tomorrow.
