Pakistan Army Successfully Concludes Field Tests of the Ghazab MLRS System

by | Feb 26, 2026

Advancing its indigenous artillery capabilities, the Pakistan Army has successfully conducted comprehensive field tests of the Ghazab (also known as the KRL-122) Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). The successful live-fire trials confirm the system’s operational readiness and its role as a cornerstone of Pakistan’s conventional deterrence. Developed as a modernized, high-performance iteration of the ubiquitous 122mm rocket family, the Ghazab MLRS reflects a commitment to precision, mobility, and overwhelming fire support in modern high-intensity conflicts.

The Ghazab system is a domestically enhanced version of the BM-21 Grad architecture, specifically optimized for the rugged and varied terrain of the South Asian theater. While the original Soviet baseline offered a range of approximately 20 kilometers, the Pakistani Ghazab variant utilizes the Yarmuk series of high-explosive fragmentation (HE-Frag) rockets, which have extended the effective engagement envelope to over 40 kilometers. This range capability allows artillery units to engage enemy concentrations, logistics nodes, and command structures from a safe stand-off distance, significantly enhancing battlefield survivability.

The technical profile of the Ghazab MLRS is characterized by its 40-tube launcher mounted on a high-mobility 6×6 truck chassis, allowing for rapid deployment and “shoot-and-scoot” tactics to avoid counter-battery fire. A full salvo of 40 rockets can be unleashed in just 20 seconds, saturating an area of approximately 14 hectares with lethal fragmentation and blast effects. The system’s versatility is further augmented by its compatibility with advanced unguided and guided 122mm munitions, such as the G-2000 family, which sets the global benchmark for range and accuracy in this caliber.

The strategic significance of these field tests is underscored by the system’s “battle-hardened” pedigree. Variants of this 122mm platform have recently demonstrated decisive, “overwhelming” results on the frontlines in Ukraine and Azerbaijan, proving their effectiveness in neutralizing modern armored formations and fortified positions. By successfully integrating these lessons into the Ghazab’s indigenous production and testing cycle, the Pakistan Army ensures that its artillery divisions remain equipped with a weapon system that is not only cost-effective but globally proven in the most demanding combat environments.
